(JULY 5, 2019) – Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and her regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) rejected the term-sharing scheme which is now being floated to resolve the Speakership row.
In a statement, the presidential daughter said her party will not gun for term-sharing in the leadership of the House of Representatives which it deemed as “counterproductive.”
“It will slow down the last three years of the administration of President Duterte. In a term sharing situation, the House of Representatives will be racked with unseating the incumbent Speaker, deceit, dissent and distrust,” she wrote.
Those advocating for term-sharing in the lower house, she added, “just want to install a Speaker and do not think about what comes after.”
The Davao City mayor then asked to leave the Speakership issue to the members of the lower chamber and the involved political parties.
HNP recently endorsed Davao City 3rd District Rep. Isidro Ungab to the top House seat, after Mayor Duterte’s brother Davao City Rep. Paolo bared his plan to join the speakership race.
Other notable contenders for the House leadership include Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate, Taguig City-Pateros 1st District Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano, Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin Romualdez, and Davao del Norte 1st District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez.
